Stoke Engagement Photographer – A Relaxed Shoot at Barlaston Downs, Staffordshire

Couple laughing during relaxed engagement shoot in Stoke-on-Trent

I recently had the chance to photograph a really lovely engagement shoot at Barlaston Downs in Staffordshire, just outside Stoke-on-Trent—and it couldn’t have been a better example of why I always keep things relaxed and natural.

Like a lot of couples, they arrived a little nervous.

They told me straight away:“We’re really awkward in photos.”

And honestly, that’s something I hear all the time.

Starting Slow (No Pressure, No Posing)

Rather than jumping straight into photos, we just went for a walk.

No pressure. No camera in their faces straight away. Just a chance to chat, get comfortable, and ease into things naturally.

Barlaston Downs is perfect for this. It’s quiet, open, and has that soft, natural light that makes everything feel calm—exactly what you want if you’re a bit unsure about being photographed.

After 10 minutes or so, you could already feel the difference.

The nerves started to disappear, the conversation flowed more easily, and they stopped thinking about the camera altogether.

Letting Moments Happen Naturally

From that point on, everything became effortless.

Instead of posing them constantly, I gave a bit of gentle direction here and there—but mostly just let things happen.

A laugh, a glance, the way they naturally interacted with each other… those are the moments that matter.

That’s always the aim with my approach—nothing forced, nothing overly staged. Just real moments as they happen.

From “Awkward” to Completely Relaxed

By the end of the shoot, it was like working with a completely different couple.

They were relaxed, laughing, and just enjoying the experience.

And that’s always the turning point.

Because once you stop worrying about how you look, you start focusing on each other—and that’s when the photos actually start to feel real.

Why I Always Recommend Engagement Shoots

Engagement shoots aren’t just about getting a few nice photos before the wedding.

They’re about:

  • Getting comfortable in front of the camera

  • Realising you don’t need to know what you’re doing

  • Feeling relaxed and confident before your wedding day

It makes such a difference when the wedding comes around, because you’ve already been through the experience once.

If you’re looking for a Stoke engagement photographer and feel a bit unsure about being in front of the camera, you’re definitely not alone.

Most couples I work with say the same thing at the start.

But with the right approach—and a relaxed setting like Barlaston Downs—it quickly turns into something you actually enjoy.
