What I love about photographing weddings at Keele Hall

Keele Hall has to be one of the most impressive wedding venues in Newcastle-under-Lyme, just outside Stoke-on-Trent. This magnificent Grade II* listed hall combines historic architecture with beautifully maintained grounds, making it an unforgettable place to get married. As the centrepiece of Keele University, it's already an iconic local landmark, but during the summer months it feels even more special. With the students away for the holidays, the estate becomes wonderfully peaceful, giving couples the feeling of having an exclusive country house venue all to themselves.

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at Keele Hall is how effortlessly the venue flows throughout the day. The grounds are expansive enough to offer incredible variety, yet the key photo locations are all within a comfortable walking distance of each other. That means couples can enjoy a relaxed portrait session with plenty of different backdrops before returning to celebrate with their family and friends.

The grounds offer an incredible mix of scenery within just a short walk. There's the sweeping front lawn with breathtaking views of the hall, mature trees that create beautiful pockets of soft light, the elegant Italian Gardens with their timeless charm, quiet hidden corners for more intimate portraits, and the lakeside, which adds a wonderfully romantic feel to wedding photographs. Every area has its own character, making it easy to create a gallery that feels varied while never needing to leave the venue.

Some of my favourite places to photograph around Keele Hall include Fresher's Gate, which creates a dramatic entrance to the venue, the impressive stone arches along the side of the hall for elegant portraits, the embankment beside the Italian Gardens, the iconic front lawn, and the peaceful lakeside. Each location offers a completely different look while remaining conveniently close to the next.

The venue works just as well for guests as it does for photography. During the drinks reception, guests naturally gather on the front lawn, creating a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for candid photographs. As the celebrations move indoors later in the day, the grand reception rooms flow beautifully into one another, making it easy for guests to mingle while keeping the celebration feeling connected and welcoming. It's one of those venues where every part of the day feels seamless, whether you're enjoying the spectacular grounds or celebrating inside the hall's stunning historic interiors.
